NHC CHILD DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS WIN #HOPINTOTIKTOK COMPETITION

Published on January 19, 2023

A team of North Hertfordshire College’s Child Development Studies students have won the #HOPIntoTikTok competition!

The challenge, created by Hertfordshire Local Enterprise (Herts LEP), involved students across Hertfordshire coming up with their own TikToks to promote the Hertfordshire Opportunities Portal (also known as HOP) to their peers. The Hertfordshire Opportunities Portal (HOP) is a project designed by the LEP to help students, employers, and local people who are looking to upskill. The site provides resources that help people make informed and confident decisions about their careers.

The winners received £100 in vouchers for themselves, as well as £1,500 for the College which will be spent on trips and visits. Entries were judged on their creativity, originality, and social media performance. Nine of our Level 3 Children’s Play, Learning, and Development students were announced as winners: Keira Anker, Ella Ansell, Mia Beresford, Lilia Carter, Grace Dear, Amy French, Eve Jones, Katie Parker, and Natalie Randall. Caroline Cartwright, Head of Skills and Apprenticeships at Hertfordshire LEP, said: “We are delighted with the high standard of entries, and the creativity and skill that has gone into producing these videos. Congratulations to our winners and finalists!”

Amy, who was part of the winning student team, explained the creative process. “We worked as a team to design our TikTok video. After researching the HOP website, we gathered our ideas on a whiteboard so that we had a structure for producing our video. We collected props from across the College to represent as many sectors as possible. The team were assigned roles based on skills such as video editing. We ensured we kept to the brief and ended up shortening our video to ensure we were within 15 seconds. We also know music is important and the song we used was catchy and relevant.”

Our students have already made use of the platform. Grace told us: “HOP is a great site to explore local job opportunities, learn about careers, and connect with local employers. We are studying Early Years and we complete our course and qualify this year, so we took time to explore the HOP Early Years profile and looked at job roles and current vacancies local to us. It is a great resource.”

Vickie Sharp, one of NHC’s Child Development Studies tutors, said: “Our students are avid TikTok users, so they were keen to submit a video. I gave them the brief and a link to the HOP website, but the rest was down to them. I’m really proud of how well they digested the brief and were able to meet the requirements, how creative and resourceful they were, and also how much fun they had in making their TikTok. This competition has not only allowed them to embed their digital skills but has introduced them to a support platform I am sure they will use for a long time to come!

“The students are looking forward to spending their personal vouchers and their upcoming trips to London to Nursery World and Dopamine Land, which is partially being paid for by their winnings!”

Congratulations again to the winning students!
