Learners on North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Health & Social Care and Child Development Studies courses attended a guest speaker session with Lisa Nyquist, Volunteers Manager at Home-Start Hertfordshire, to find out more about the services the charity offers.

Home-Start Hertfordshire coordinates a team of volunteer Family Mentors, connecting them with families in the community who would benefit from extra support during periods of difficulty. The Family Mentors work with families struggling with issues such as post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, and bereavement. Mentors typically spend two hours a week with their assigned families to help them build the skills, confidence, strength, and mental resilience to nurture their children.

During the session, our learners listened as Lisa shared her knowledge and experiences in working with Home-Start. She emphasised the importance of supporting families and children during difficult times and the positive impact that this can have on family units.

The guest speaker session fits in with what our students will be learning in their classes throughout the rest of the academic year, particularly their units on child development. Now, our students have a head start and can already start to think about different elements of child development, helping them feel more confident and prepared for the later units in their programme. Ellie Johnson, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Health and Social Care students, commented: “I found the talk very helpful as it showed how mums and families are supported, which has really helped with my understanding of child development.”

Anna Copper, a Health & Social Care tutor at NHC, reflected on the value of the service Home-Start provides to the community. She said: “Having been visited by a volunteer from Home-Start myself when my children were small, I knew how important the charity’s work is. I knew that the learners would benefit from Lisa’s expertise and I’m grateful for the time she spent talking to our students.”
