Hitchin Maths Team Win Third Place in MEI FE Maths Challenge

Published on April 11, 2025

A team of students from across courses at North Hertfordshire College’s Hitchin Campus recently took part in the MEI Maths Challenge final at Harlow College, ultimately coming away with third place!

Will, Sam, Ajay, Damien, Lennie, Alex, and Ryan are all completing their GCSE and Level 1 Maths qualifications as part of their chosen NHC pathways. Working in two teams, the students took part in in-class challenges against 5,255 students from across the south east. Their success in these challenges saw the teams work their way up the leaderboard and secure their spot in the final round – an amazing achievement in itself, but one that’s made even better by coming in third overall.

Amit Panesar, one of NHC’s Maths Curriculum Innovation Leaders, told us: “Ki and I are incredibly proud of the way the students pushed through their initial hesitations and really embraced the maths challenge. Throughout the journey to the regional final, these students have demonstrated growth, resilience, and dedication.

“It was amazing to see how they came together as a team in the final, working to their individual strengths and supporting one another every step of the way. Their efforts truly paid off, earning them a well-deserved spot among the top three.”

Maths and English skills are essential for success in any career, from business operations to bricklaying, catering to computing. That’s why we support our learners in achieving these all-important qualifications if they don’t hold them when they first join us and continue to include the skills in their chosen subject area too. We’re pleased to see how well the students did in the competition, and it shows great promise for their exams.

Congratulations to the students on this achievement!
