North Hertfordshire College’s Business students recently had the opportunity to visit Wimbledon for a ‘Business of Wimbledon’ workshop.
The experience provided a unique behind-the-scenes look at the finances behind one of the world’s most famous sporting events. This included exploring ticket pricing, memberships, and the exclusive debenture structure (where guests can book prime seats on Centre Court or No.1 Court for five years and have access to exclusive hospitality spaces) that helps fund the tournament.
Our students also learn about Wimbledon’s sustainability initiatives, including their partnership with WaterAid, their work towards eliminating single-use plastics, and the use of electric lawn mowers to maintain the world-famous grass courts.
As part of the workshop, our learners participated in an interactive challenge where they could brainstorm innovative ways to further develop and grow Wimbledon’s legacy for the future. This, in addition to the exploration of the wide range of careers available with Wimbledon such as marketing and hospitality roles, has helped our students build an even stronger understanding of where their business studies can take them in the future.
They even had a tour of the iconic grounds and learnt some interesting facts that will come in handy in future quizzes – including the precise number of blades of grass on Centre Court!

This type of engagement helps to deepen our students understanding of core concepts and helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making their learning more tangible, and impactful. We are very grateful for the opportunity and can already see how the students’ active participation has had a benefit in the classroom.”
