North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 TV, Film & VFX learners were so excited to welcome Tom Holmes, a foley mixer at leading post-production company Molinaire, to Purwell Studio for an insightful Q&A session.
Foley mixers are responsible for recording, editing and mixing real-world sounds to complement or replace the sound recorded on set at film shoots.
Just like our students, Tom chose to complete a Level 3 Film Production course at college. Now, at just 22 years old, his name can be seen in the credits of several major film and television projects.
Tom explained his career journey and how he managed to secure his dream role at the prestigious organisation. Having been in the same position as our current students just five years ago, Tom was able to share relatable, authentic guidance to help our learners get a sense of the opportunities and challenges that may lie ahead in their own career journeys.
Tom also shared insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of a foley mixer, like recording over 500 individual footsteps to add to film soundtracks. He explained how he works effectively with clients to deliver their brief and even name-dropped a few celebrities he’s worked with, like Louis Theroux!
At the time of the session, our students had just completed their own sound-project, so Tom’s explanation of professional Foley sound processes added context to their classroom learning.
Film Production student Seth commented: “This talk was a really interesting insight into the world of sound in film and TV, particularly how he progressed into the role he is working in now.
“The most valuable part for me was learning about the creative ways sound effects are produced, especially how unusual or unexpected objects can be used to create realistic sounds on screen”.
By gaining insight into real career pathways from those successfully working in the sector, our learners are now better equipped to make informed decisions about their next career steps. Learners have begun considering their own specialisms, too.
