Education & Early Years Students Spread Festive Cheer

Published on December 15, 2025

North Hertfordshire College’s Education & Early Years students recently planned and organised a fundraising event to mark Christmas Jumper day.

The students decided they wanted to run a full-day event and get local children involved. The event featured a raffle, stalls selling crafts, and hot chocolate stands to help contribute to the fundraising total and spread some festive cheer. As well as being a demonstration of our students’ entrepreneurial flair, the fundraising activities also tied in with the students’ learning around child development and lesson planning.

Our first-year T Level students planned a series of craft activities suitable for young children and invited children from the local Busy Bee’s nursery to our campus to create some Christmas gifts to take home. The T Levellers organised the visit themselves, writing a letter to the nursery and creating a consent form for parents to complete, helping them gain practical experience in the reality of planning trips for children.

To help stock the stalls, our Level 1 learners explored the primary school classic of making salt dough decorations and Level 2 students made sweet and chocolate truffle cones as stocking stuffers.

The students also held a raffle featuring generous donations from local businesses, including Tesco Extra Stevenage, Thistle & Willow, Sasha’s Salon, JC Fitness & Performance, Ampthill Rugby Club, Andy @ Taylor and Stapleton.

Taylor Smith, one of NHC’s Education & Early Years tutors, told us: “The students will use the skills developed from this event in all aspects of their course and personal life. Events like this are something that students will often do when they enter the childcare and education sector as a job, and they’re also applicable to personal life.”

The event was a great success, with our students raising a grand total of £176 for Save the Children. Congratulations to everyone involved!
