Shaping Their Understanding of Textured Hair Types

Published on July 24, 2023

Derick Brown of D Brown the Barber joined North Hertfordshire College’s students for a showcase session about Afro hair! Our students benefitted from Derick’s many years of experience and expertise in working with textured hair types during the session and are now more confident when it comes to starting their careers.

The workshop, held at NHC’s own Hart Salon training facilities, saw our Level 2 Barbering and Level 3 Hairdressing students come together for a two-hour session on the basics of textured hair types. Students learnt about the tools used for different lengths of hair, including the gradient numbers (guards) used in blending hair. They also learnt more about the techniques used to cut afro hair including the importance of symmetry, alignment, cutting directions, shaping, and considering hairlines. Thanks to Derick and his model assistant, our learners were able to see this all come together in a practical demonstration to reinforce concepts.

NHC’s student hairdressers are now better prepared for their future careers following this informative introductory session. Afro and textured hair requires different techniques to straight or even wavy hair, making it important for hairdressers and barbers to have a good understanding of proper care and styling techniques to avoid mistakes. This initial introduction has given students a starting point on which they can build their skills working on a variety of different hair types in the future.

Freddie Hefford, one of NHC’s Level 2 Barbering students, told us: “I really enjoyed the session, it gave me a good understanding of how to cut afro hair. I hadn’t realised all the technicalities that are involved, so it was really helpful to see that.”

Derick said: “I thoroughly enjoyed myself during the session, it was great to get so much positive feedback from the students and lecturers present. It is always a pleasure being able to pass on your years of experience and knowledge within a field you are passionate about, with the potential that the future students within this industry can use those skills to further progress and better their careers down the line.

“I would like to give a huge thank you to Rachel Currell [Hairdressing tutor at North Hertfordshire College] for allowing my contribution along with the rest of the department that were present, as well as a big thank you to all the students that took part. I look forward to working with you all again in the future.”

Thank you to Derick for sharing your knowledge with our learners!
