Over 100 students across North Hertfordshire College’s Levels 1, 2, and 3 Computing, Networking & Design courses enjoyed a ‘Links with Industry’ event with Willmott Dixon Holdings Ltd.!
Based in Letchworth, Willmott Dixon is a construction and property development business which operates from around 20 offices in the UK and employs more than 3,000 people. The event aimed to help our students understand the range of opportunities available in their field within organisations and sectors that they may not have previously considered. After all, the technical knowledge and transferable skills that our learners develop during their programmes mean that they can apply for IT and Computing roles within any business, rather than purely technology companies.
During the event, students learnt about the opportunities and possibilities for career progression within the major employer, as well as what employers are looking for when someone applies for a job.
The event was attended by more than a dozen employees from Willmott Dixon representing five departments within the company:
Each department hosted a table where a representative from the company gave an outline of their typical work day and a description of the software they use. Students moved around the tables to meet with all the representatives and ask questions to find out more about the opportunities within the company.
Rakhee Shah, Deputy Head of Computing, Networking & Design at North Hertfordshire College, said:” This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet people who work in IT, to learn about the range of job roles in a major organisation and, perhaps most importantly, to learn what employers are looking for in a job applicant. This was also an invaluable insight for staff when they develop the curriculum and teaching content to ensure that we are up to date and our NHC students are prepared for industry. We’re grateful to Willmott Dixon for enabling this event to take place and for making it a huge success for our students.”
Our students certainly agree with Rakhee. One enthusiastic student told us: “I found it fascinating that Willmott Dixon, a construction company, has so many IT roles within the company. I really enjoyed finding out more about their cybersecurity work from the speaker from the department!”
Thank you again to Willmott Dixon for helping to inspire our students!
