Meet Ross, he completed a Protective Services course with us back in 2024. Since then, he’s won two community awards and secured a full-time role at the Office for National Statistics.
We caught up with Ross to discuss his NHC experience and hear more about his career journey so far:
What course did you study at North Hertfordshire College?
“I started at NHC in September 2020 when I enrolled on Level One Sport, Coaching and Exercise Science. During this year, I also passed my GCSE in English.
“After my first year at college, I started on Level Two Protective Services, before progressing to Level Three. I’m super proud to say that I achieved a Distinction*, Distinction*, and a Distinction. I also went on to pass my GCSE in maths at the college.”
What did you enjoy most when you were studying on your course and at college?
“I enjoyed the different subjects and modules on the Protective Services courses. I found the policing and criminology units most interesting and enjoyed understanding general crime statistics. The staff on the course were really supportive and knowledgeable which helped me to understand the subject more thoroughly.
“I received discrete support from NHC’s Additional Learning Support team. I like to work independently but I always knew support was there if I needed it. I found this most helpful in maths lessons and during my Protective Services exams.”
What is your current job title?
“I am now employed as an International Passenger Survey Interviewer at the Office for National Statistics. I interview passengers to hear about their travel experiences and ensure that the data I collect is accurate. I enjoy the role as I get to meet and speak with people from different cultures, industries and jobs.”
How did NHC support you in preparing for this role?
“The skills and knowledge I gained during my time on the Protective Services pathway have been invaluable within my new role and gave me the confidence to apply for the job in the first place! Since I have started in this position, my confidence has grown significantly.
“Since leaving college, I also won two awards. The first was a Services for Young People 2024 award and the second was a Future of Hertfordshire award from Heart Radio. I attribute my success to the support provided to me while at NHC.”
What are your hopes for the future?
“I hope to move into a management position within the Office for National Statistics eventually.”
What one piece of advice would you give to students starting at college?
“Take any support that is available to you and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
