At North Hertfordshire College, we’re here to help you reach your goals and unlock your full potential. Whether you’re looking to build the skills to start your career straight away, or you’re looking to learn even more at university or through an apprenticeship, our teams are here to help you on your journey.
We caught up with Millie Chance, an NHC graduate who used the knowledge and skills she gained through her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science to open doors to a BSc Physiotherapy degree at the University of Bedfordshire. Find out more about how Millie’s time with NHC prepared her for her next steps in her interview:
How did North Hertfordshire College support you in preparing for university?
“During my experience at College, we had the opportunity to speak to multiple different guest speakers ranging from university lecturers to apprentice employers. However, I was keen to study physiotherapy. My course tutor showed me the different pathways that I could take to get me to where I am today.”
Which topics and skills that you learn at NHC do you still use in your current course?
“My diploma in sport and exercise science consisted of either writing assignments or completing exams for each unit. I had assistance and support from the College during my two years with organising, planning, and writing assignments. I also received advice and help with my exam preparation and built my knowledge of study methods that I now use to achieve well in exams. This has all been a great help when it comes to university because pursuing higher education and a degree requires more independence.
“I’ve recently finished a placement as part of my university course, which involved treating several conditions. For example, one patient required treatment for a total knee replacement. The sport massage unit I studied at NHC provided me with the knowledge, skills, and techniques to perform massage. Additionally, learning anatomy and physiology with the College has provided me with a foundational understanding of the subject that I may build upon in the future.”
If you could speak to someone who is thinking of applying to NHC, what would you say to them?
“I believe that choosing to study at North Hertfordshire College is an excellent choice and a fantastic opportunity. In my experience, my tutors had a passion for the subject they were teaching and they were keen for our class to succeed. The tutors would work together with our class and individually to ensure they gave us the best guidance, as well as to check in with how we were finding the course.
“There were so many brilliant opportunities given to us, as we had the chance to visit two local universities as well as guest speakers coming to the College. The tutors also had an experienced background in the sport and exercise science sector and they were happy to share their stories and answer any questions that our class had. I finished the course a year ago, and my past tutors are still willing to help and support me with my future.”
Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?
“I hope to have graduated and finished my degree and hope to be a band 5 physiotherapist working for the NHS. In the future, I wish to specialise and work towards becoming an MSK Specialist Physiotherapist.”
We wish Millie all the best for the future!
