CASE STUDY: JOURNEY TO A HIGH-FLYING CAREER

Published on July 20, 2022

Whether you already know what your dream career is, or you just know that you’re interested in a particular industry, a course from North Hertfordshire College can help you on your journey to your next steps. Lily Goodship, one of NHC’s Level 2 Travel and Tourism students, has learned more about the Tourism sector through her course and now feels more confident about how to get to her dream career.

We spoke to Lily to find out more about her choice to study at NHC, and what she’s enjoyed about her experience so far.

Why did you choose to study at North Hertfordshire College?

“I chose to study at NHC because I knew from a young age that I always wanted to study and work in the Travel and Tourism industry, and NHC seemed like a perfect option to do this. I’ve not only found the course really fun, but it’s also really interesting and I love anything to do with the Travel and Tourism industry.”

What was the most interesting part of your course?

“I found the Responsible Tourism unit really interesting. I came into the course not knowing anything about how important it is to be a responsible tourist and how our actions can have an impact on the environment and an area, and how working in the industry can have an impact too. I now have a better understanding of this issue, thanks to the course. It was very interesting and fun to learn about.”

What was the most surprising thing about studying at NHC?

“For me, the most surprising thing about studying at the College was how much more freedom you get in comparison to being at school. The timetable means you’ve got time to complete assignments while you’re on campus, but you’ve also got time to spend at home if you need it. You always have support from your tutors, and you’re treated more like an adult.”

What are your next steps after you finish your course?

“I’m planning to come back to NHC for another year to study for my Level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism. After that, I’m planning on going straight into working in the Travel and Tourism industry. In 5 years, I’d like to be working as cabin crew for an airline.

“This course has been really helpful for my career already. I’ve gained more knowledge about the industry and have learnt so much that I didn’t know about. Hopefully, this course will make it easier for me to break into the industry.”

If you could speak to someone who is thinking about studying a Travel and Tourism course at NHC, what would you say to them?

“The College is a very calm place to study in. The course tutors are always around, supporting you and pushing you to reach your targets.”
