Case Study: Hairdressing Learner’s Journey from NHC to Industry

Published on October 4, 2024

At North Hertfordshire College, we are committed to equipping our learners with the specific knowledge, skills, and experience needed for success in their chosen industry.

Our learning environments include a public-facing salon, an NHS-standard mock hospital ward, a student-run restaurant and much more. These spaces are designed to help our learners build confidence working in a realistic industry environment before entering employment.

We caught up with Eloise, who successfully completed our Level 1 and Level 2 Women’s Hairdressing programme, before securing full-time employment as a Hairstylist and Colourist at local salon, Kenny Arnold.

During her course, Eloise spent a time working on real-clients in our student-run salon, The Retreat. This unique work experience opportunity allowed her to get comfortable delivering client briefs, and confident using industry-standard equipment.

To compliment her practical learning, Eloise developed a deep understanding of the theoretical aspects of hairdressing, such as customer service and management skills.

Find out more about Eloise’s NHC journey below:

How did NHC prepare you for employment?

“My time at North Hertfordshire College helped me develop the hairdressing knowledge and techniques I needed before qualifying and moving into employment. The salon at the Hitchin campus helped me build experience working on real clients whilst learning as well, which helped me feel confident working on real clients when I started my job.”

Which topics/skills that you learnt at NHC do you use in your current role?

“Everything I learnt while being at college has helped me with my career. From the day-to-day techniques I use when cutting and blow-drying to the bigger jobs like colouring.

“College also helped me develop strong organisational skills, which I use when arranging appointments and prioritising my daily tasks. The customer service skills I developed when working in the College salon have been really useful, too. I draw on the skills I gained while at North Hertfordshire College every single day.”

Where do you hope to be in five years’ time?

“I hope to keep achieving and learning more, and to reach an even bigger clientele.”

What would you say to someone who is thinking of studying at NHC?

“100% go for it!”

Eloise is just one of many learners who have secured employment in their chosen industry after completing their course – leaving college feeling fully prepared to use their newfound skills and experience in their working life.
