Did you know North Hertfordshire College offers courses for adults to help you get back into studying? Our Return to Education and Access to Higher Education courses are designed to help learners build essential study skills and confidence to go on to study higher qualifications, including university-level courses.
We caught up with Clair Robertson, one of NHC’s Access to Higher Education: Nursing & Midwifery students, to find out more about how her North Hertfordshire College journey has supported her in taking the next step towards her goals.
Clair told us:
“I completed the Return to Education course in 2025, and am now enrolled on the Access to Higher Education course. I had been out of education for over twenty years before then, and I feel the Return to Education course has been an invaluable stepping stone for me.
“Return to Education (or Pre-Access, as it’s sometimes called) bridges the gap between level 2, which is roughly GCSE level, and Level 3, which is more like an A Level. As well as giving me a chance to develop my skills, this course was also an opportunity to assess my current life commitments and look at where I have availability to find study time, make plans for childcare, and adjusting any work schedules.
“The course content was engaging and thought-provoking. Developing skills around IT and referencing definitely made the first unit of my new Access to Higher Education course easier!
“I’ve made friends who have the same aspirations and goals as me whilst on the Return to Education course, and we are currently now on the same Access to Higher Education course together. Meeting others in similar life circumstances and being able to support each other – and have a laugh, too – has really been the cherry on the cake.
“I cannot recommend this course highly enough.”
