North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Business students took part in the London Metropolitan University x Sainsbury’s finance event, putting their skills to the test and learning more about future study and career opportunities for after their NHC studies.
The event offered our learners the chance to hear directly from the finance and economics lecturers at the University, who shared valuable insights into the degree programmes that they offer. Three finance directors from Sainsbury’s also joined the session, discussing their career journeys and offering advice to the students on how to make the most of their learning and tips on how to start their careers.
Jayden, one of NHC’s Business students, commented: “It was great to get an insight not only into the university, but also into how people in really high-powered jobs at a major company like Sainsbury’s have gotten to where they are now from similar starting points to us.”
In addition to the presentations, our learners were also given a case study challenge to complete and present to staff. The challenge was themed around business growth opportunities and the process of setting up a new store, including the different market factors and analysis that an organisation would have to consider during the process.
Emma Ball, Deputy Head of Sport, Public Services, Business & Travel at North Hertfordshire College, was enthusiastic about the positive response our learners had to the challenge. She said: “It was fantastic to see them actively engage and pitch their ideas to the Sainsbury’s team. Their ideas impressed the directors so much, they joked that the students were competition for their own jobs!”
Activities like these help our learners to plan for their next steps after college. Whether they plan on applying to university or going straight into working in industry, joining in with extracurricular events and experiences are a great way to bring their learning to life and start planning for how to reach their goals.
