North Hertfordshire College’s Computing, Networking & Design learners showcased their problem-solving and programming skills in a hackathon with the British Computing Society’s Hertfordshire branch! The competition saw learners from across all levels of computing courses, from entry level up to our T Levels and second-year Level 3’s, test their abilities against a number of coding and cybersecurity challenges.
Described as an ‘immersive session of problem-solving, coding, ethical hacking, and computing theory’, the hackathon saw our learners spend a full day working on the challenges. The goal was to earn as many points as possible by solving a series of puzzles, with bonus points awarded depending on the complexity of the challenge or being amongst the first to solve it.
Harry Wilgucki, T Level in Digital student, commented: “Participating in the hackathon was an enjoyable experience for me. It not only introduced me to valuable resources that I can explore on the web, but it also provided a highly social environment. During the event, I had the opportunity to engage in conversations, discussing and learning from their experiences.”
By working in a positive competition, where collaboration between learners was also encouraged to help them develop their skills, our learners have built up their confidence in ethical hacking and programming. An awards ceremony at the end of the day recognised those learners who demonstrated exceptional skills, tenacity, and support for their peers.

Mackenzie Gray, Level 1 Computing student, commented: “The hackathon provided me a challenge and tested my knowledge in multiple areas of IT. I had to think outside of the box in order to answer some questions, which also expanded my knowledge in the process. The event overall was brilliant and I got the Judge’s Choice award and came in first place for my year.”
The positive impact of the session doesn’t end there, though – the insight our tutors have gained through seeing learners’ approach to the challenges will help shape the design of future classes and coursework. The experiences and projects from the hackathon will be used as case studies and examples, providing real-world context in lessons. NHC’s Computing department’s connection with Paul and the British Computing Society will also continue to be developed, as well as other industry connections, to further connect our course to industry practices and expectations.

The session encouraged creativity, innovation, and positive competition, pushing participants to excel within a set timeframe. Overall, the hackathon served as a dynamic and enriching experience that prepared students for the evolving landscape of the technology industry.”
