NHC BARBERING & HAIRDRESSING STUDENTS ARE A CUT ABOVE THE REST

Published on October 3, 2022

Here at North Hertfordshire College, our Hairdressing and Barbering students complete work experience placements alongside their courses. These placements are the perfect opportunity for our students to test their skills in a professional environment and help them break into the job market – sometimes even through job offers from their placement employers!

Take a look at some of our favourite success stories from NHC’s Class of 2022 below!

Liam Watts, Level 2 Certificate in Barbering

Liam’s placement took him to Men At Work, a unisex hairdressing salon in Hitchin. Business owner Michael Debnam awarded Liam a rating of ‘Excellent’ for all elements of his work during his placement, and even offered Liam some further part-time hours over the summer beyond his original 30-hour placement!

Melissa Tilbury, Level 2 Certificate in Women’s Hairdressing

NHC’s WEX team arranged a placement for Melissa at Jo’s Hair Salon in Hatfield Town Centre. Melissa performed well during this placement – so well in fact that she’s been offered a part-time job with the salon!

Kimberley Lacey, who owns Jo’s Hair Salon, said: “Melissa’s attitude to learning was fantastic… I have offered her a Saturday job as I was very impressed with her work ethic. The more time Melissa spends with customers, the more she will continue to learn.”

Melissa is really happy about her new job and for the opportunity to continue developing her skills beyond her course – and about being able to walk straight into employment!

Matt Andrews, Level 2 Certificate in Barbering

As a result of his exceptional performance throughout his Level 2 course at NHC and his 30-hour work experience placement, Matt has secured a permanent full-time role at MR Barbers in Hitchin! Matt joined NHC as a mature student, having decided on a career change and being determined to succeed and reach his goals. He embraced all aspects of the course, including the opportunities for professional networking amongst his new colleagues in his placement.

Matt’s supervisor, Sam Collier, said Matt had strong skills and fitted in with the team immediately. The team were delighted to have met Matt through the work experience programme as they were hoping to recruit another team member and Matt proved to be perfectly suited!

Matt has now been working with MR Barbers since April and said: “I’m definitely glad to have gained some shop experience alongside the taught college environment, as I found it different to be working in a real business. I’m still enjoying working with MR Barbers and would definitely recommend getting a work placement to help you get ‘get ahead’ in the job market.”
