Charity Of The Year

Every year, our staff vote for our Charity of the Year. Our staff and students then take part in various fundraising activities throughout the year.

We have unleashed the chefs among us, with staff cooking up a storm as part of our annual street food challenge, and we have seen staff and students brave the cold in sponsored sleep outs to raise vital funds. The lockdown didn’t stop us either, staff took to the streets and challenged themselves to walk ‘virtually’ to San Francisco, with friends and family sponsoring along the way.

Every year the students and staff take part in RAG (Raising and Giving) week and we see a whole week’s worth of charity bakes, sports challenges, staff sponge throwing, sponsored cycling, you name and we do it, all in the name of raising essential funds for our chosen charity.

Garden House Hospice

Our chosen Charity of the Year for 2019/20 is Garden House Hospice Care. Garden House Hospice provides specialist palliative care for patients facing life-limiting illnesses, supporting families and carers to enable them to have the best possible quality of life by providing care and support in the setting of their choice, without discrimination.

Garden House Hospice Care follows a philosophy of care with the following principles:

  • To work as a team of both professional staff and trained volunteers dedicated to developing and maintaining the highest quality of compassionate care in co-operation with other agencies.
  • To make available a support system following the diagnosis of a life-limiting condition, to help patients live as actively and creatively as possible, aiming to enhance their quality of life.
  • To integrate psychological and spiritual care for patients.
  • To respect the choices and wishes made by patients and their families.
  • To work to help the families and important others cope with patients’ illness and in bereavement.
  • To affirm life and regard death as a normal process; not seeking to hasten or to postpone death.

Susannah, a representative from the charity, said: “Garden House Hospice Care is delighted to be NHC’s charity of the year and has already started working with students. It is great to see such enthusiasm from the students who want to learn more about the hospice and give back to their community. Each year we need to raise nearly £5 million to run our services free of charge, so this partnership means a great deal to us and enables us to continue to provide care for our patients and their families.”

Students and staff will be putting on fundraising events throughout the academic year with proceeds going to Garden House Hospice Care, from raffle ticket competitions, barbering services, three peaks challenge and RAG week. With support from local businesses like Hart Salon, Hart Kitchens and many more, students will also be able to raise money through student held events.
