In 2014, Sean O’Brien completed a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at North Hertfordshire College – now, he is a full-time professional illustrator working with clients such as The Guardian and Cancer Research UK.
During his time with us, Sean developed key design skills in areas like drawing, observation, and printmaking.
Sean commented:
“It was during my Foundation that I realised my skills in drawing, problem solving and working quickly would really suit me as an illustrator. I particularly enjoyed creating work through printmaking and pen and ink drawings while I was studying.”
He quickly realised that the nature of art and design really suited his personality and skillset, so decided to further his artistic education by progressing to Kingston School of Art.
After securing his qualification, Sean briefly returned to North Hertfordshire College to gain some work experience as a Creative Arts Technician, working alongside his ex-tutor, Roger who inspired him throughout his time at college. A huge thank you to Sean for giving back to the NHC community while inspiring the next generation of creatives.
Currently, Sean is drawing on the skills and techniques he learnt at college and university while working full-time as a professional, independent illustrator. So far, he has worked on pieces for The Barbican theatre and national publications such as The Observer. Congratulations Sean!

“My time as a student on the Foundation course at NHC really helped me work out what I was good at and how I could apply it to real life work. NHC is really big on bringing in working practitioners which is a fantastic opportunity if you want to work in the Creative Industry!”
Through classroom and workshop sessions delivered by our experienced tutor teams to opportunities to work alongside real employers through industry visits and work projects – Art and Design programmes at North Hertfordshire College fully prepare our budding creatives for the world of art and design.
