There's more to college than just studying
Your time at NHC is important to us. We want you to enjoy the experience, meet new people and try different activities as well as get the qualification you need to progress in your chosen career.
Beyond the experiences you’ll enjoy as part of your course at NHC, there are many other ways you can get involved and enjoy college life. For instance, a number of events, fundraisers and conferences are held through the Students’ Union and extra-curricular opportunities are held through the sports and wellbeing team. As well as being fun, these experiences will also give your CV an edge when you start applying for university, apprenticeships and job opportunities.
Our Student Services team provide an extensive range of services and specialist support to people experiencing short or long term difficulties. These services include one-to-one personal support outside the classroom, counselling, help to access additional learning support and help to access financial support such as course funding, free college meals and help with childcare costs.
EATING & DRINKING
Visit the café at each of our campuses for a selection of fresh hot and cold food, at affordable prices. Stevenage Campus also has a Starbucks concession serving hot drinks and a range of snacks.
Hitchin Campus also has NHC’s student-run restaurant, Hart Kitchens, which is open to students from Tuesday – Thursday during term time. You can eat in or takeaway and specials start from £1.50.
All students are able to get a sQuid catering account that you can top up to spend on college meals. You simply scan your student ID card to pay for food from your digital sQuid purse.
For information visit Student Services or contact 01462 424242. Remember you may be eligible to receive free lunchtime meals.
EDUROAM WI-FI
Here at North Hertfordshire College (NHC), we use eduroam Wi-Fi to give our students and staff access to the internet.
Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
Once you’re registered, you’ll be able to access eduroam Wi-Fi at NHC. You’ll also be able to access Wi-Fi at any other participating establishment around the world.
With eduroam installed, there’s no need to request a special account – just activate your device and you should be online. You just need to use the same username and password as you would use at NHC.
For more information about eduroam click here. If you have any difficulties accessing eduroam, please contact NHC’s IT Service Centre on ext. 4444, 01462 424244 or email servicecentre@nhc.ac.uk.

If you are having a problem and need someone to talk to, our counselling service provides a team of highly experienced counsellors who are happy to talk things through with you. You can self-refer by filling in a short form at any reception desk, or contact your success coach who will be happy to put you in touch with a counsellor.
Money matters
It’s really important that you don’t let money matters get in the way of you attending college. If you think you need financial support, please visit your Student Services team or email moneymatters@nhc.ac.uk. For more information visit our finance page.
Additional learning support
If you have a learning or physical disability we may be able to offer you Additional Learning Support (ALS). You’ll complete an interview with a member of the ALS team who will help identify any areas where you may need extra help with your studies.
If you had exam access arrangements in the past, you may be entitled to have these again at NHC. You will need to bring medical evidence or a signed ‘form 8’ from your previous setting and hand it to ALS staff by the end of September. Further testing may be required to fulfil JCQ awarding body regulations.
If you wish to discuss your support needs, talk to your tutor or contact als@nhc.ac.uk/01462 424343.
If you have learning support input at NHC, it may be possible to complete a full diagnostic assessment for a Disabled Students’ Allowance application. There is a DSA Access Centre where you can take needs assessments at our Hitchin Campus.
STUDENT PRESIDENT
The Student President is elected by the student body each year. Their job is to listen to student views and work to improve NHC for all their fellow students.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES
Student Representatives are one of the most important roles you can play as a student. You provide the link between the classroom and the College - you can tell the College what’s going on, what you like and what can be improved / changed and we can inform you about what’s going on in the wider College.
The main responsibilities of the Student Reps are to be a point of contact and support for your classmates and to keep them updated with events and activities at NHC. They also have important duties such as supporting campaigns, attending Student Parliament and working with NHC on events and open days.
Student Reps for each class will be elected in early October.
