JOB PURPOSE

Our Supported Studies provision is looking to recruit term time only and fractional agency Learning Support Assistants for September.

We’re keen to attract staff with experience of working in education or with young people who have special education needs or disabilities (SEND).

  • Our Entry level 1-3 courses involve a variety of sessions and learning activities to promote independence and develop employability skills.
  • In this role you would provide support for students by implementing a range of effective learning strategies to ensure an outstanding student experience and enable each to realise their full potential.
  • You will also have the opportunity to access a range of specialist SEND training.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to work with a large experienced team who are committed to preparing our students for adulthood and their next steps.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The role of the Learning Support Assistant calls for a dedicated professional with the necessary experience, skills and personal qualities to establish immediate close working relationships with young people and the tutor team.

The post holder will be expected to have:

  • Experience of working with young people who have learning difficulties and disabilities or students in a teaching environment.
  • Commitment to improving opportunities for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities especially in the areas of independence, health and well-being and work opportunities in order to prepare the young people for adulthood.
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to motivate others to reach their potential.
  • High levels of personal integrity and confidentiality.
  • A strong track record that demonstrates the ability to adapt and develop creative methods to engage young people.
  • Self-motivation and a proactive approach to utilising personal initiative within a structured framework.
  • An understanding of health and safety, equality and diversity, safeguarding and SEND reforms.
  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification in English and maths.
  • Level 2 qualification in learning support or related discipline.

 

 

 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) will:

  • Provide highly effective support for students in the classroom and throughout their college day whilst promoting independence.
  • Assist tutors/lecturers in delivering outstanding teaching and learning to ensure students achieve the planned outcomes and reach their potential.
  • Interpret instructions, support students in following instructions and assist with communication issues, to ensure equal access for all.
  • Implement the recommendations of the student’s individual learning plan, initial assessment, student targets or Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • Contribute to the setting and monitoring of student’s individual targets on PDP and for their EHCP by keeping accurate departmental records.
  • Assist with personal care, aid mobility, administer medication and provide the relevant support with individual arrangements for students with high support needs as appropriate.
  • Support students in engaging with work experience opportunities. This may include: liaising with students, employers and the workplace coordinator to arrange work placements, coaching students for interviews and maintaining departmental work placement records.
  • Adhere to confidentiality guidelines and college policies for health and safety, equality and diversity and Safeguarding.
  • Contribute to the work of the Supported Studies curriculum team; attend curriculum events and course, department and academy meetings.
  • Participate in training and team development activities to ensure that they have up to date awareness and training in supporting students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
