What sort of thing do you teach at North Hertfordshire College?
“I teach Biology on two BTEC courses at the College, and I also teach on the Access to HE programme. The Access course is for adult learners who may be returning to education, or who are thinking of changing career to a new field, or they want to study a topic further. It’s a programme for people from all backgrounds who want to get into higher education.”
What did you use to do before teaching at NHC?
“Before I started teaching here, I used to work in the NHS. I was a Medical Laboratory Assistant at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, and I learnt a lot from working there with all the doctors. I use all of the things I’ve learnt in my career in my teaching, it’s great to be able to bring that experience to my lessons.”
What has been one of your highlights of working at the College?
“I’ve really enjoyed the time that I’ve spent working at the College so far. I really enjoy the people I work with, they’re great and so supportive. NHC is a very positive environment for students and employees. I really like using the knowledge I gained during my time working in the NHS to inform my classes and provide my students with real-world examples. I especially like using my industry knowledge to help shape my lessons and share with students what it will be like in the world of work. We also have great links with employers on our courses so students get to ‘ask an expert’ from industry all about the subjects we learn about.”
What would you say to someone who is thinking of studying a science course at NHC, what would you say?
“NHC’s location is great, we’re within easy reach of so many great science companies and organisations like Autolus, GlaxoSmithKline, and Catapult. The level of teaching here is excellent, everyone is supportive and we’re always learning ourselves. There’s an open-door policy, so if you need anything then there’s always someone to help. You’ll be really supported during your time here, we run regular one-to-ones to keep you on track to where you want to be.”
