MEET THE TEAM – ROSS WARD AND GEORGIE BURNS

Published on January 20, 2022

In this Meet the Team interview, we bring you not just one member of our amazing teaching team, but two! Ross and Georgie are two of our course team leaders and tutors, with Ross teaching Sport Coaching and Georgie teaching Public Services. Find out more about their experience of working at North Hertfordshire College!

[Since posting this story, Georgie has now been promoted to Deputy Head of Curriculum for Sport, Public Services, Business, and Travel]

Why did you each decide to become tutors?

R: “I started working at North Hertfordshire College in 2011, meaning I’ve now worked here for 10 years! Before working here, I was primarily in football coaching and training roles. I have coached all around the world, including New Jersey and Nevada. For me, teaching and coaching go hand-in-hand, it just felt like the next step to take.”

G: “I started working at NHC in 2016, so I’ve been here for 5 years now. I used to be a student here, studying on the level 3 sports course. I wanted to progress in my field and ended up applying for a job here and got it! I wanted to be able to make a difference through teaching, to support the students in their next step in their own journeys.”

What has been a highlight of your teaching career so far?

R: “A highlight for me has to be the international trips to Italy, they were a great experience. It’s great for our students to get these experiences during their courses. Also, after a while you get to see older students come back and say that they have ‘made it’. I’ve had people going on to get a PhD, join the police, and a lot of people who break into the sport and exercise science industry.”

G: “The biggest highlight for me is being able to support the students with my knowledge. It has been great seeing some of my students progress into specific public service roles once completing their course. Another highlight for me is seeing our ex-students again to deliver insightful talks to her current students on their career choices.”

Why did you want to enter the sport and exercise science industry/public services?

R: “I wanted to work in the sport and exercise science industry because I love the subject area. I also love staying fit and getting to work with like-minded people who share the same thoughts about exercise and sport.”

G: “I agree, I wanted to work with like-minded people. I love the industry and wanted to share that love and my knowledge with the next generation of students.”

What would you say to someone who is thinking about a course at NHC?

R: “I would tell anyone that’s thinking of studying at NHC that they will have a great experience on this programme. We have brilliant tutors who have all got experience in the field. So many students who come here end up making it in their field, there are so many clear pathways open to you after you leave.”

G: “Also, our sports and exercise science and public services teams are amazing. We’ve got two tutors with master’s degrees, one with a PhD, ex-military service people (mostly with experience in the army), a coach from Stevenage FC, and a Special Constable– just to name a few!”
