Did you know that, as well as offering a range of vocational courses, North Hertfordshire College also offers GCSE and Functional Skills English and Maths? The skills gained on these courses are essential for success in the workplace and also in daily life, which is why we’re proud to work with such a great team of teaching and support staff on these programmes.
Meet Rosalyn – one of our English tutors who works across our GCSE and Functional Skills programmes! Since following her heart and changing career from marketing to teaching, Rosalyn brings her passion for education and inspiring learners to her role with the College, helping our students to build their skills and gain those all-important qualifications.

What inspired you to start a career in teaching?
“When I left university, I started working as a Marketing Assistant. My mum was a music teacher, and I found myself getting really excited and animated when talking to her about the lessons she was teaching, so I quit my career in marketing and retrained as a teacher.
“I started off working as a cover supervisor at a local secondary school and they took me on as an unqualified teacher. A couple of years later, I trained through the University of Hertfordshire on the Graduate Teacher Programme – a bit like a teaching apprenticeship, where I spent four days teaching and one day at university. Once I qualified, I worked in a number of different secondary schools in Hertfordshire and Bedford for ten years become coming to work at the College.
“I’d done some supply teaching here for English classes in 2017 and got in touch again in 2019 to say I was available to work as a supply teacher again and was offered a part-time role and I was thrilled.”
What do you enjoy the most about working at NHC?
“The Maths & English team are great, and we work really well together. I also love the variety of different students I get to meet each year and getting to know them. Working with the College is a highlight, I was really happy when I was offered the role!
“I absolutely love my job here. It’s the first job I’ve had where I don’t get that Sunday night dread about going to work on Monday. That’s rare, and it’s why I always recommend NHC whenever anyone is looking for a place to study or work.”
What makes your courses stand out to students?
“The GCSE English course here is very focused on the skills you need to get at least your Grade 4. We don’t just spend the entire year revising for your retakes – the curriculum is planned out so that your confidence and ability grow throughout the year.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is thinking of joining a course with NHC, what would you say?
“I’d advise all students coming to the College to embrace everything the College has to offer, both vocationally and socially. Even the Maths and English lessons!”
We think all jobs in education are some of the most important and fulfilling jobs in the world – helping people realise their potential and build a life for themselves; helping businesses to grow and improve; and helping to build strong, vibrant communities.
