A complete beginners course for those who want a general overview and introduction to drawing and painting.

HOW AND WHAT WILL I LEARN

You will be introduced to a variety of techniques and the formal elements of painting and drawing. This will include, line, colour, texture, form, perspective and many more. You will also experiment with a wide range of mediums, ranging from pencil, charcoal and, acrylics. The aim of the course is to develop your own creative pathway through fundamental painting and drawing techniques. You will learn to employ the following:

  • Line
  • Shape
  • Form
  • Composition
  • Negative space
  • Chiaroscuro
  • Tone
  • Mark making
  • Colour theory (learn to mix paints from a limited palette)

This course will challenge you to break down preconceptions and to develop your own ideas using traditional and experimental approaches, in both historical and contemporary contexts.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Basic kit for every session (any additional items you need each week will be sent to you by email prior to the session)

  • A1 medium cartridge paper x 5 sheets (130 – 250gsm), A2 is acceptable x 10 sheets (A3 is too small). A1 sheets can be bought individually at most art supply stockists, as and when you require it
  • A4 sketching paper (min 5 sheets for testing purposes) 
  • Large eraser
  • Pencils 8B, 4B, 2B, HB
  • Penknife
  • Masking tape
  • Two large bulldog clip
  • Ruler
  • Sharpener
  • Scissors (for paper)
  • Wet wipes 
  • Paper towelling (only a few sheets)
  • An old terry towelling cloth for clean up, e.g., face cloth
  • Large carrier bag to keep your artwork flat
  • Apron or old clothes you don’;t mind getting dirty
  • Water bottle (drink)
