Future Study and Careers
For young people aged 16 and over, we have a range of full-time creative arts courses.
This course is for home educated young people aged 11 to 15 years old.
During the 12 weeks, the students will work with a ‘live’ project brief set by the Royal Opera House, with a choice of either Set or Costume Design. This year’s design brief will focus on Peter Grimes, Benjamin Britten’s sombre opera about a fisherman ostracised by his community. Students on the course do not need a love of opera to join the course, but they do need a love of Art & Design. Artwork produced will include a wide range of 2d and 3d materials, whilst developing design ideas through the design cycle/process. Students will gain knowledge of inspirational artists throughout the project and will benefit from professional industry links. Students will also develop broader skills, such as confidence and independent working, as well as the experience of working in a professional working environment and facilities.
North Hertfordshire College is a flagship centre for the Royal Opera House Design Challenge and, as such, this course has been funded by the Royal Opera House to widen participation and opportunities within theatrical design. In 2020, one of our previous Home Educated Students won the Design Challenge with his set design for La Bohème. As a winner of the competition, his work was exhibited at the Royal Opera House, along with a winners’ event, including a free performance and backstage tour.
