Entry Requirements

No previous InDesign knowledge is required.

A working knowledge of the Mac (as you be learning in a Mac suite) and keyboard and mouse skills. A keen interest and a willingness and commitment to practice between lessons. Access to InDesign 2020 CC, many (but not all) of the techniques used will be achievable in older versions of InDesign, but a current subscription is advised.

What you need to know


This is a beginners course ideal for learners looking to expand their knowledge and skills and those pursuing job roles in design, web development and more.


You will learn the key tools, techniques and skills within Adobe InDesign. This is a beginner’s course so you will learn the programme from scratch, this will include setting up documents, using and formatting text and image, incorporating grid systems into your designs, and using interactive tools within your documents. Creating two final pieces of design, allowing all the skills learnt to be utilised in a contextual setting.

  • Week 1: Introduction to InDesign- Learn the key tools of InDesign, how set up your workspace efficiently as well as how to set up a variety of document types.
  • Week 2: Using and Formatting Text and Image- Learn how to add text and image to your InDesign documents and how to effectively format these elements using layers, size, colour and effects.
  • Week 3: Grid Systems and Transforming content- Investigate the theory and use of grid systems within design and how it can elevate and transform your InDesign document.
  • Week 4: Interactive tools – Delve into the world of interactivity and how we can add these new and exciting elements to your InDesign documents using buttons and navigation.
  • Week 5: Business Card Design- Create business cards, using all the skills and tools we have learnt in previous weeks. This session will allow you to start to experiment and explore the programme more independently as you are guided through the creation of your business card.
  • Week 6: Multipage Booklet Design You will be set a brief to create a multipage booklet around the subject of your choice. This booklet should evidence all the skills learnt within the last 6 weeks. Your tutor will be on hand for guidance and to help with your creations.
