Entry Requirements

No previous Illustrator knowledge is required. A working knowledge of the Mac (as you will be learning in a Mac suite) plus keyboard and mouse skills. A keen interest and a willingness and commitment to practice between lessons. Access to Illustrator 2020 CC, many (but not all) of the techniques used will be achievable in older versions of Illustrator, but a current subscription is advised.

IS THIS FOR ME?

This is a beginners course ideal for learners looking to expand their knowledge and skills and those pursuing job roles in design, illustration, typography and more.

HOW AND WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will learn the key tools, techniques and skills within Adobe Illustrator. This is a beginner’s course so you will learn the programme from scratch, this will include setting up artboards, creating shapes and images, adding and transforming text, and adding effects to enhance your designs. This will all culminate in creating a final piece of design, allowing all the skills learnt over the 6 weeks to be utilised in a contextual setting.

  • Week 1: Introduction to Illustrator- You will learn the key tools and panels of illustrator and how to effectively set up your workspace.
  • Week 2: Creating and editing shapes – In this session you will learn how to draw and combine shapes, effectively use lines and how to trace pixel images into your illustrator workspace. You will also explore how to use the path and pen tools to create basic shapes and lines.
  • Week 3: Transforming shapes and artwork- This week we will be exploring how to transform your artwork through resizing, grouping, aligning and erasing. We will also explore the use of colour, strokes and gradient and how these elements can change and enhance your artwork.
  • Week 4: Adding and formatting text –You will learn how to add, format, place and reshape text for your artwork.
  • Week 5: Adding effects- This week we will explore the different effects that can be used to enhance your shape, images and brush strokes.
  • Week 6: Logo Design – Within this final session, you will be set a short brief to create a logo design using all the tools and skills you have learnt in the previous weeks. Your tutor will be on hand throughout for guidance and help.

Learners should bring a USB drive (minimum 500Mb) to save work.
