At North Hertfordshire College, we’re proud to offer students meaningful, real-world work experience through close collaboration with industry, and it’s even better when we can invite our past students back to talk about their own experience in industry!
That’s why a group of our Level 3 Business students experienced an industry talk with ex-student Craig Putton, who is now Sales Manager of Belvoir Estate Agents, Hitchin.
Craig delivered a masterclass session on the estate agency business, which included information about how to get into the business, the highs and lows of being an estate agent, specific skills needed for this role and what he would look for in an apprentice as a local employer having worked in the industry for over 20 years.
Craig’s approach was really engaging, and he shared some excellent advice with our students – never turn down new opportunities and to work hard and give the right impression. He told us: “It was a pleasure to do the talk, especially as I was a student at the College many, many years ago; it was nice to be able to give something back.”
Following the talk, some of our students put Craig’s advice into action and showed great initiative by contacting Craig to thank him for his session. In fact, one student even printed off his CV and drove down to the Hitchin Belvoir branch to thank Craig and enquire about work experience!
The talk formed part of the course’s general employment enrichment, which is made up of various speakers from different employers, especially from local businesses. Over a course of a few weeks, employers carry out careers talks for students focussing on raising the aspirations of our learners. This session will also contribute to the students work experience project.
