North Hertfordshire College’s Film, TV and VFX learners enjoyed a hands-on learning experience at the University of Hertfordshire’s Propeller Film Stage.
Delivered in collaboration with Sky Studios, our learners completed the Propellerhead Set Readiness Training. It was a jam-packed day of practical, on-set workflow training designed to prepare our learners for their future working environments.
The training covered the responsibilities of runner and assistant roles, as well as the physical, technical and communication skills required to keep sets moving smoothly.
After successfully completing the training, our set-ready Film, TV and VFX students are now on the Propellerhead shortlist for upcoming runner and assistant opportunities on productions filmed at the new soundstage at the University of Hertfordshire. The shortlist is a direct pathway into live professional shoots, providing extremely valuable work experience opportunities.
Adam, a first-year Film, TV and VFX student commented: “I found the trip to Propellerhead at The University of Hertfordshire extremely insightful into the skills required for entry level roles in the industry.
“Other useful aspects of the trip were getting to speak to the floor manager at Propellerhead about how the sound stage operated, learning about the relationship between roles in the industry and their on-set presence, and talking to the talent manager for Sky studios about what it is like working in Film and TV.
“Overall, this experience has made me feel more prepared for my first role on a professional set.”

The skills, knowledge and experience gained on this insightful trip will now be embedded into our learners’ curriculum. Students will apply their new professional on-set skills such as etiquette, health and safety, communication and production workflows into their projects and assessments.
