We caught up with Alex, Level Three Creative Industries Course Team Leader, to find out more about his career journey so far.
What inspired you to pursue this role?
“I originally trained as an actor but found I became more interested in the teaching element of performing arts. I’m fascinated by the way people can interpret scripts and characters, and I find it really rewarding to support students to make bold creative decisions in their work.
“I knew I wanted to maximise the impact I had on learners, so I decided to pursue teaching.”
What did you do before you joined North Hertfordshire College?
“After completing my degree in acting, I gained experience in a variety of roles, including theatre duty management, seasonal performance work, and door to door sales. Each of these varied roles enriched my understanding of the industry, and the different pathways within it.
“After reflecting on how much I enjoyed teaching, I decided to pursue an MA in Actor Training and Coaching, which I completed in 2019. Since then, I have worked at several drama schools and taken on roles as a Theatre Director and Coach.”
What do you enjoy the most about working at NHC?
“One of my favourite things about NHC has to be how creative the students are. Students from across all of the Creative Industries courses recently exhibited their work at the Hitchin campus, and it’s been so cool to walk around and see what they’re capable of.
“I also love how every day is different and you never know what you might stumble across. For example, I recently finished teaching and popped into Purwell Studios to see a wonderfully choreographed light saber battle being filmed!
“Plus – the sausage rolls are pretty good!”
What has been a highlight of your time at NHC?
“For me, the most rewarding highlight has been witnessing the growth of our students throughout the course. It’s truly inspiring to see how much they develop over the two years.
“It’s great to see them discover new aspects of themselves, and begin working towards their newfound specialism, whether that’s becoming a writer, technician, director, or just stepping outside of their comfort zones by taking on unexpected roles and making bold creative choices.”
What makes your courses stand out to students?
“When teaching my course, I make sure my learners stay up to date with industry news and innovations, so they can understand what the industry is looking for. We discuss casting, audition techniques and methods to create their own work.
“We bring serving industry professionals into the classroom to speak with our learners about their career journey and provide insight into the current and predicted needs of the film and TV industry. Most recently, we were joined by Dawn King, an award-winning writer working in theatre, film, TV, radio and other forms.”
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is thinking of joining NHC, what would it be?
“Enter with curiosity and without ego.”
