North Hertfordshire College’s Construction apprentices and students recently enjoyed an engaging visit from Sam Matthams introducing his conservation work and his fellowship with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), to talk about his work in the sector.
SPAB was founded by William Morris in 1877 in response to architects who restored buildings improperly and caused irreparable damage to structures. The organisation now works to support other organisations and their workers by providing training schemes, courses, and advice to help preserve buildings for future generations to enjoy.
During his talk, Sam covered topics including the work he’s completed in his fellowship and why conservation is important. He even brought some props along for our learners to look at, including a sash window and materials such as rabbit skin glue. Sam engaged the learners in his audience and helped them to think more broadly about where their studies with NHC can take them. Some learners are even now considering a career in the sector and are interested in taking part in work experience in the field!
The experience certainly left a positive impact on our students and our staff. One tutor said: “That was fantastic, it was so inspiring for the learners to hear from someone they could relate to. It was great having someone in to speak to students with so much passion. Our learners also enjoyed being able to identify the skills they’ve developed that will serve them well in the future. We’d love to have Sam visit again in the future!”
Julie Purdie, Apprenticeship Programme Manager over at NHC’s Engineering and Construction Campus, told us: “Sam did really well to keep the audience engaged and his enthusiasm came across throughout. It’s so important to broaden our learners’ horizons and give them food for thought for their futures. Sam shared very valuable information to support learners realistically to plan their futures.”
