North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Protective Services learners enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to take part in an armed policing training event!
The Public Services students were invited to act as casualties in a session for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Armed Policing Unit’s training day at Papworth Everard, a disused hospital near Cambridge. The training session was designed around the initial policing response to a Marauding Terrorist Attack (MTA), a fast-moving attack where assailants intend to harm as many people as possible.
This was an amazing opportunity not only for our learners to discover what it’s like to take part in training sessions with uniformed protective services, but also to see what strategies and techniques they use to control and diffuse a terror situation. Officers were carrying firearms with blank ammunition and tasers with inert cartridges, as well as distraction devices and smoke grenades – serious stuff!
As part of their course, learners develop their understanding of discipline within the protective services and emergency responses to scenarios. Being able to see real police units complete the exercises has really helped bring the concepts they’ve been learning about in the classroom to life.
The learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience, describing it as “very informative.” One student told us: “this was a really good trip, as I want to join the Army Reserve Units and it was amazing to see how they train.”
