North Hertfordshire College’s Science students have taken their learning across borders, joining in with a STEM Expo with students from St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean!
During the session, our learners, Science teams, and IT department delivered a livestreamed lesson from our labs at our Stevenage campus to a class of students in the Caribbean. Our student scientists demonstrated how the upstream vaccine production process works and showcased our facilities and equipment in the process. There was even a demonstration of our exciting new SITEC facilities, including our VR headsets and immersive science software in partnership with FourPlus.
Millie Watson, one of North Hertfordshire College’s Level 3 Applied Science students, commented: “What a rare and amazing opportunity, thank you to St Kitts and Nevis for being so welcoming!”
The opportunity stemmed from Lionel C. Wallace DL, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, who got in touch with the College to discuss the possibility of a science showcase with the overseas students. This was a great way for our learners to be able to pass on their own experience and understanding of a range of science topics to the students, reinforcing their technical understanding of their modules whilst also applying their communication and teaching skills too.
The High Commission of St Kitts and Nevis said: “Thank you once again on behalf of the Ministry of Education in Nevis, students and the entire STEM team.”
This initial project was a real success and we’re already planning for how we can make the next event even bigger and share learning across the world. Watch this space!
