WHAT IS A 16-18 STUDY PROGRAMME?
If you are aged 16-18 and join NHC as a full-time student you will follow a 'study programme'. Study programmes are designed to equip you with the breadth of skills and experience you need to progress in your chosen career. They include three essential elements:
An occupational qualification, for example a City & Guilds certificate, or BTEC diploma
Support to improve your English and maths:
If you have already achieved A* - C in maths and English at GCSE, you will not need to complete a formal qualification as part of your study programme, though you will continue to improve your skills as part of your main occupational qualification
If you gained a D in either or both of maths and English, you will follow a GCSE programme so that you can achieve the A* - C standard that employers will expect of you
If you gained an E or below, you will study a functional skills qualification at an appropriate level to help you prepare for later progression to GCSE
The opportunity to gain real work experience with local employers in your chosen sector
WHAT WILL I GET FROM A STUDY PROGRAMME AT NHC?
At NHC we take great pride in the support we provide you to get where you want to be in life. We work really hard to make sure that our study programmes really do prepare you for what comes next – whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or a job. Though we deliver study programmes in a huge range of different sectors and occupations, they all have certain things in common:
They’re all about helping you develop the skills, knowledge and practical experience you need to progress in your chosen sector and occupation.
They all include the opportunity to enjoy meaningful work experience with an employer in the sector you want to work in.
They are all taught by tutors who are genuine experts in their field - many of our team have substantial industry experience, working in the sorts of job roles you aspire to.
They all include additional activities to support your learning and development, including competitions, community projects, trips and visits.
They are all taught in great learning environments at one of our four campuses across Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth Garden City.
They all provide great pathways into higher education programmes – both at NHC and in universities – apprenticeships and jobs.
WHAT WORK EXPERIENCE IS ON OFFER?
All study programmes include work experience and work-related activity. This could be delivered through a single work placement, a combination of shorter placements, or short work placements and some work-related projects within the college.
At NHC we’re really fortunate to have great relationships with some amazing businesses that are really committed to working with our students. This year, for example, students have enjoyed work placements with employers like Fujitsu, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Hilton Hotels and TUI Thomson.
