NHC expands Stevenage Skills Centre

North Hertfordshire College’s Stevenage Skills Centre opened its new extension on March 4th providing 8700 sq ft of space for classrooms, work benches, construction and motor vehicle engineering and maintenance. Since the launch of the Skills Centre in 2008 it has been inundated with students seeking practical courses and this new facility will accommodate 280 more students.

NHC also acts as a major focus for the college’s sustained programme of working with both local and national employers to develop training and learning courses that are precisely tailored to prepare students for the world of work, whilst also ensuring they develop skills that meet employers’ needs.

One of the key results of the partnership between employers and NHC has been a motor vehicle apprenticeship programme that focuses on paid employment in the work place, plus an element of class-based theory and practical skills development. At the heart of this has been a close relationship between NHC and Vauxhall Motors that has included the gift of a Vauxhall Insignia car valued at over £30,000 which has resulted in greatly enhanced hands-on learning for students in vehicle repair and service. In recognition of this practical and flourishing partnership and to commemorate the new facility being opened, a specially commissioned plaque was unveiled by Vauxhall Motors’ Community Officer, Cherie Denton.

Fintan Donohue, Principal of North Hertfordshire College, said “We are delighted by the response of both large and small employers to the Stevenage Skills Centre. The support for our Apprenticeship Scheme in particular has been of huge benefit to young people seeking employment in a difficult financial climate. The flagship programme with Monarch Aircraft Engineering to supply quality control for their apprenticeship training has provided a real boost to the centre even at this early stage of its development”. We are also delighted to have won contracts with Stevenage Borough Council, ASG Biggleswade and Hitchin Brake & Clutch.
