Equality and Diversity in Training and Learning

The College operates a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate language and behaviour. This is clearly stated in the student handbook and in the staff induction programme.

The College is predominantly “white” in its catchment areas; the College takes the view that inappropriate behaviour is not conducive to effective learning in any context. The relationship between tutors and learners is central to the college’s equality and diversity strategy. Tutors are encouraged to give clear messages about student entitlement to a safe inclusive and supportive environment.
Support tutors are reminded that learners arrive with concerns around childcare, relationships, health, finance, sexuality and personal safety. In reorganising its entire service offer in 2009 the College aspires to create a multi skilled team of support staff that can deal effectively with the multiciplicity of concerns that learners can have. College wide events (e.g. World of Work and Multicultural Week) combined with curriculum enrichment play a role in promoting tolerance and acceptable behaviour.

(a) Classroom Management
Staff receive training to develop their understanding of diversity. Good practice from outside the College is promoted with the support of external consultants and resource banks from AoC, NILTA and other agencies. The use of appropriate teaching methods to suit diverse learner needs is built into the colleges teaching observation process. For learners with disability for example access to specialist equipment, etc. is seen as a pre-requisite for achievement. Most learners have individual learning plans and ceruse expectations are made explicitly in these plans.

(b) Complaints
The college conducted a review of its complaints procedures in 2009 with aid of external researcher. As a result a revised procedure has been approved. The new procedure is more explicit in its monitoring of racial, anti social and discriminatory behaviour.

Monitoring and Reporting our Equality & Diversity

The 08/09 report which was considered by the Board of Corporation in June 2009 is published at our Freedom of Information section. Targets for 09/10 are integrated into the Strategic Plan 09/10 and a separate section on Equality & Diversity is also contained in the Strategic Plan.
