North Hertfordshire College Sandwich Design Sets Competition Ablaze

A unique sandwich designed by students in Hitchin is set go on sale at SUBWAY® stores across the region.

The Sub, called, The Fiery Fajita, is the result of a competition launched last year by SUBWAY® Stores, asking budding entrepreneurs from schools, colleges and sixth forms to design and market a new sandwich. The winning design, developed by a team from North Hertfordshire College’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy in Hitchin, is now available for customers to enjoy across the region, for a limited time only.

In total, more than 55 teams from across the region entered the competition. Using a rigorous selection process, these teams were whittled down to just six finalists: Ken Stimpson Community College in Peterborough, Northampton College, Milton Keynes College, Suffolk One based in Ipswich, West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds and North Hertfordshire College in Hitchin. All five colleges were invited to an exciting Dragon’s Den style pitch in front of a judging panel to win the ultimate prize.

Following a series of impressive pitches from all the colleges, the team consisting of Nicola Chappell (21), Connie Willoughby (19) and Jemma Barker (18), from North Hertfordshire College was declared the winner. The enterprising trio came up with The Fiery Fajita Sub, asking customers if they ‘can handle the heat’. The Sub contains chicken, lettuce, peppers, Jalapeños, cheese, light mayo and hot chilli sauce on wheat bread and will go on sale in over one hundred SUBWAY® stores across the region from today.

SUBWAY® entrepreneur Bob Moodliar, who sat on the judging panel, commented: “North Hertfordshire College’s The Fiery Fajita really stood out as a excellent design. After the team’s hard work it is brilliant to see their marketing materials and concepts come to fruition and launch in stores. The SUBWAY® franchise is made up of thousands of entrepreneurs and it’s great if we can pass on some of our knowledge to the younger generation, who may even consider franchising as an option for owning their own business. We hope customers enjoy the Fiery Fajita as much as we do!”

Sarah Lee, Course Leader and Business Enterprise Manager from North Hertfordshire College, said: “The project gave the pupils a great real life learning experience. The opportunity to work with such a well-recognised local business added both excitement and an increased depth of understanding to their knowledge throughout the project. Seeing the pupils design and marketing materials in store is really the superb.”
