This sector includes hair care, cosmetic and skin care companies, fragrance producers, nail care and health treatments. The sector is big business in the UK – it is worth nearly £20 billion and employs more than one million people.
THE JOBS
The beauty sector will continue to grow over the coming years, meaning that there will be a continual need for skilled beauty therapists, nail technicians, hairdressers, make-up artists and barbers – both in small salons and clinics, high street chains such as Toni & Guy, department stores and spas.
LOCATION
Our hair, beauty & holistic therapy students are based at our Hitchin Campus, which includes Hart Salon – our student-run salon.
HANDS ON
Our hairdressing and beauty therapy courses include lots of opportunities for you to get hands-on experience of the world of work, including:
- work experience with businesses like Champney’s, Aqua-Sana, Center Parcs, Wella and local theatre companies
- the opportunity to help run Hart Salon, working with paying customers
- visits to businesses and major events such as Salon International, Pro Hair Live, Baber UK, Victoria & Albert Museum and Professional Beauty Show
- workshops including Dermalogica and Wella London, tanning, advanced waxing and stone therapy
THE COURSES
NHC courses give you the knowledge and confidence to land your dream career in the world of hairdressing, beauty therapy and make-up artistry. Highly experienced and knowledgeable tutors will train you on courses related to:
Barbering: our courses will provide you with the expertise in the basic aspects of barbering. The course includes cutting, styling, facial beard shaping and consultation, and health and safety. Additionally, you’ll develop retailing and reception skills, and learn how to promote future products and services to enhance the growth of the business. You’ll be equipped to enter the industry with all the essential knowledge required for a successful career in barbering, having developed your wider communication and commercial skills.
Women’s hairdressing: our courses will provide you with expertise in all aspects of women’s hairdressing. This will include the knowledge of what is required from a junior assistant, to the skills of a junior and advanced stylist. The courses include cutting, colouring, perming, styling and consultation. Additionally, you’ll develop retailing and reception skills, and learn how to promote future products and services to enhance the growth of the business.
Beauty therapy: our courses will provide you with expertise in all aspects of beauty therapy including facials, manicure, pedicure, waxing, lash and brow treatments, make-up, body massage, permanent hair removal, face and body electrotherapy treatments, and microdermabrasion. Additionally, you’ll develop retailing and reception skills and learn how to provide skin analysis, figure diagnosis, as well as dietary and exercise advice, with all treatments relating to a good understanding of anatomy and physiology and how the body works.
Theatrical and media make-up: on our courses, you’ll learn the basics of character make-up, special effects and media make-up, hairdressing techniques for media make-up, wigs, postiche, prosthetics, bald caps and the application of airbrush, camouflage, media, fashion and photographic make-up.
