Who is the course for?

The HNC/HND is a one or two year programme leading to the award of Higher National Certificate/Diploma. The diploma is equivalent to a Level 5 qualification (eg Foundation Degree), and has guaranteed progression to university for a top up to full honours degree (depending on grades). As a recognised qualification employers and professional bodies can also provide progression opportunities depending on your grades.

Entry requirements

You will need to be 18 or over and have evidence of a level 3 qualification such as: · a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Science or similar discipline · a GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject · other related level 3 qualifications · an Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education · institution · related work experience and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in the scientific work sector. This is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C preferably in English, Mathematics and Science. Mature learners may be required to undertake an interview and a Mathematics diagnostic test to confirm suitability for the course. Students who do not currently have GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English will be required to take Level 2 numeracy and literacy classes alongside their programme.

Course content

The HNC/HND is comprised of various units. We have selected 9 HNC units that have an emphasis on Biochemistry and Chemistry including Laboratory Techniques for Applied Biology, and Pharmacological Principles of Drug Actions. If you are successful and wish to continue onto the HND then we would consider selecting units after discussion with you. Assessment is criteria based and will take many forms including practical investigation, presentations, reports, discussion, blogs and wikis etc. NHC has excellent support including specialist inclusion assistants, tutorial systems, VLE and Student Services. There are 5 compulsory units including Cell Biology and Laboratory Techniques for Applied Biology. There are also 4 specialist units including Pharmacological Principles of Drug Actions and Chemistry for Applied Biologists. Part of our tutorial system will include the unit Personal and Professional Development adding to your credit profile.

Progression

Progression onto the HND will depend on successful completion of the HNC.
