Is this course for me?

Students would be expected to have a good standard of both English and Mathematics as set out in the normal entry requirements for an A Level programme. Students are advised that the course includes a small amount of statistical work. Mode of Study: The course is offered during the day over two years. Students will study for AS in the first year and then progress to A2 in the second year The AS course is also offered as a one year class in the evening. Examination Board: AQA specification A. What qualifications or skills will I need to have to get on the courses?

5 GCSE’s grade C or above, to include English and preferably Mathematics, and an average GCSE Point score of at least 43.

What does the course involve?

The specification enables candidates to:
• Study research, theory, concepts, methods and terminology in Psychology
• Develop an understanding of ethical issues in Psychology
• Develop critical and evaluative skills in relation to this material
• Design and report psychological investigations and analyse the results

In the first year students study several key areas of psychology:

Module 1
• Cognitive Psychology including memory and eye witness testimony
• Developmental Psychology including early social development, attachment and the effects of day care
• Research methods in the context of the topic areas

Module 2
• Biological Psychology including stress factors, affecting stress, coping with stress and managing stress
• Social psychology including conformity, obedience and independent behaviour
• Individual Differences including definitions of abnormality, approaches and therapies

What options will be open to me if I successfully complete the course?

Many psychology students progress to University, many studying psychology itself. The study of psychology leads to a wide range of professional psychology careers and more general careers such as Human Resource Management and Public Service.
