NHC A Level and Diploma students shoot for the stars

Students at North Hertfordshire College were overjoyed with their A Level and Diploma results this year.

Overall success rates were extremely high this year with a pass rate of 96% for A Level students, with 79% of A Level courses achieving a 100% pass rate. The pass rates for Diploma students on their main programme of study were exceptionally high this year at 92%, a 20% improvement compared to 2010. Pass rates on the project element of these diplomas were also outstanding at 89%, 10% above the 2010 figure.

NHC Principal Fintan Donohue commented: “I am delighted at the improved success rates this year for all NHC students at what is inevitably a difficult year for university places.”

A level students Jayne Watson and Daniel Darby who both achieved A* grades are off to university with Jayne planning to study medicine and Daniel physics. Natalie Morris, Emily Jackson and Emma Forster achieved university places to study Primary Teaching (BA) after achieving triple distinction grades in the BTEC level 3 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

Jayne Watson, 18, from Stevenage has amazed herself with her A Level results. Jayne explained: "I got an A* in Psychology, A* in Biology and an A in Chemistry, I was completely shocked, I wasn't expecting it at all. I applied to study Biochemistry at the University of East Anglia, I'm now going to try and either swap courses to study medicine or take a year out because I've always wanted to be a doctor."

Daniel Darby, 18, also from Stevenage was very happy with his results, Daniel achieved a grade A* in Maths, an A in Physics and a B in Chemistry and is now going onto University College London to study physics. Daniel commented: “I didn’t have much confidence in maths until I came here and met my tutor. I’ve always enjoyed physics and would like to become a physicist.”

Tom Hepworth, 19, from Stotfold, achieved a double distinction in his BTEC National Diploma in Medical Science and now plans to study Sociology at Lancaster University. Tom explained: “I was nervous because I didn’t think I’d done that well, I’m relieved and excited about the future.”

As well as achieving university placement success this year, NHC A Level and Diploma students are progressing onto Apprenticeship programmes and planning to start their own businesses.

Callum Haskins, 19, from Arlesey, passed all his A Levels and has already started work as a Customer Service Representative for an insurance company. Callum commented: "I've been working for two months now, it's a lot of fun and I can see myself progressing, the company I work for offer an Apprenticeship programme to achieve a high level qualification in finance which I'm hoping to study next year."

James Williams, 17, from Stevenage, has passed his A Levels and is now planning to study the Level 3 Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at NHC’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. James commented: "I want to be my own boss, I've already started my own cleaning company offering domestic and commercial oven and carpet cleaning."
