Job search websites

The internet is a great way to find out about the jobs available with lots of sites featuring the latest vacancies. These are some which we have found to be useful in North Hertfordshire:

www.indeed.co.uk : type in your postcode and the job search engine do all the work.
www.easyjobs.com : this job search site is easy to use even for web first-timers.
www.jobs24.co.uk : you can access local vacancies using this site from The Comet newspaper group – why wait for Thursday’s paper?

Local vacancies

The Training for Employment team works closely with Job Centre Plus, matching the training offered against the skills that industries who are currently recruiting really need. This means that if you want to change direction you could do the basic training or even a qualification to put you ahead of the competition.

Here’s what one of the Job Coaches has to say about the retail market:

Retail, the sleeping giant
By Kevin Mills, Training for Employment, North Hertfordshire College
Regardless of the state of the economy we all need, food, drink, clothes and other commodities. Many shops are still thriving and have job vacancies: the large supermarkets, the major clothes retailers, hairdressers, fitness centres, cafes, restaurants and fast food outlets, mobile phone shops, bookmakers and chemists.

And it’s not just sales assistants that are needed. Other services are vital to retailing too: cleaners, stockroom and warehouse staff, night shift workers, customer services and drivers.

The following stores have an annual staff turnover due to retirement, maternity leave, dismissals etc of approximately 40%: Boots the Chemist; ASDA; Matalan; Primark; Sainsbury’s; Tesco; Waitrose; Morrisons; Marks and Spencer; Argos. Vacancies at all of these can be applied for at any time, and if positions are not immediately available, they will keep suitable applicants paperwork on file for up to three months.
