INFORMATION ABOUT TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
There is an annual salary review effective from 1st August each year. Salary is paid into a nominated bank account on the last working day of each calendar month.
Working Hours
Full time employees have a standard working week of 37 hours and are required to work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the role. Some posts may require evening and weekend work. Management spine staff are required to participate in the evening duty manager rota, which ensures that a manager is available at all times when learners are present to deal with emergencies.
Annual Leave guidelines and dates:
The leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August in each year, and leave is calculated pro rata in the year of joining/leaving. The leave entitlement is 35 days per year for management spine, 42 days for lecturers and a variable amount for support staff/trainers (minimum 20 days), plus bank and statutory holidays. Academic staff are required to be in College on allocated days, in accordance with the College Calendar for the relevant academic year. The College may close for efficiency reasons for up to a week in each year (usually over the Christmas/New Year period), for which management spine and lecturing staff are expected to use days from their holiday entitlement and support staff may receive courtesy days. Holidays are not permitted during certain periods (e.g. enrolment late August to mid September), or on whole College staff development or College Conference days.
Pension Schemes
The College operates the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for academic staff and the Local Government Pension Scheme, administered by Hertfordshire County Council, for support staff. Management spine contracts may be considered as academic or support depending on the role.
Probationary Period:
All new staff are required to serve a probationary period before being confirmed in post. For support staff this is 6 months and for lecturers and management spine it is 12 months. The College appoints a mentor for the probationary period to assist the new employee in settling into the College environment, and there is an induction programme for all new staff.
Trade Union Recognition:
UCU is the recognised trade union for academic staff and UNISON for support staff. The College is committed to collective bargaining, and seeks to reach agreement on terms and conditions of service and staff policies and procedures.
Policies and Procedures
The College has adopted policies and procedures for employment and staffing issues, all of which are regularly reviewed and posted onto the staff intranet. These include procedures to deal with issues of discipline and capability, grievance, harassment, sick leave, maternity, paternity and adoption. All policies and procedures link into the College’s comprehensive Equal Opportunities Policy and related Equality Schemes.
Dress Code
All staff are required to adhere to the College’s dress code.
