Employability skills

North Hertfordshire College recognises that you may not yet have gained the essential skills you will need to progress in your chosen career. Whether that career is in building, hairdressing, engineering or childcare, the ability to communicate and calculate is of great importance.

Employability Skills delivery isn’t about redoing the mathematics, English and computing you completed at school. It involves the practical communication, numeracy and IT skills you’ll need to be successful in your employment. To achieve high grades in your vocational assignments, you will need to demonstrate these essential skills. The employers who employ many of the students from NHC expect you to demonstrate good communication and numeracy skills at interview. Because NHC puts a lot of resources into supporting you in gaining these skills, employers recognise our students as being highly employable.

Being able to use ICT is a vital skill also highlighted by employers and HE institutions as essential. The use of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications is the basis of the ICT part of Employability Skills. Being able to use numbers to meet everyday situations in the workplace is also part of the course. Using numbers is much more common than many people realise, and can really make a difference when writing assignments, particularly if students are aiming to achieve distinction grades.

At NHC, we are committed to equipping our students with the essential skills for life, covered by Employability Skills to ensure that they achieve at the highest level possible, while studying their chosen area of interest. Make good use of support available - it will help you to succeed.

Employment experience

Whilst some programmes offer a learning environment which is true to a real-life work environment, all students are encouraged to undertake activities which provide the experience you need of life in the world of work. With a variety of activities to choose from, coming to NHC will bring you one step closer to your chosen career.

Work Experience

Many programmes offer work experience for students and we encourage all students at NHC to identify any possible placements in which they may be interested. We have a dedicated team of staff who can help you to find the right place, to get the work experience you need, to follow your career path.

Company Visits

All programmes incorporate visits to local and national employers and organisations. With site visits, including tours and discussions with key employers, our company visits can enhance your learning with an introduction to the world of work.

Guest Speakers

A variety of guests speakers are invited throughout the year to talk to you about their experiences and how they arrived at where they are today. With a comprehensive programme across all curriculum areas, students can take advantage of visits from guest speakers on their own programmes, as well as dipping into areas outside their curriculum choice.
